What is Maya calendar?

This calendar was created by Maya civilization that existed during period from 250 – 900th year AC. Mayan empire occupied the southern areas of Mexico and stretched up to Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and partly also Honduras. Mayan empire had a highly developed writing, architecture and civil construction.

Mayans used many different calendars, which were used not only for daily, weekly and annual work planning, but also for religious activities. The most of Mayan calendars were very brief. Tzolk'in calendar was intended for only 260 days. Haab' described the solar cycle, which lasted 365 days. Later, these two calendars were combined, establishing "Great cycle" or period, which lasted 52 Haabs'. The new calendar, or "long calculation" was for 5126 years.

Mayan prophecy is that at the moment when the end of the "long calculation" calendar comes with the end of the world. Mayan experts are divided into two camps, putting forward two possible end of the world dates. Because Mayan day cycles were both 13 and 20 days. So the world's first death could be at the time when the Mayan calendar will show 13.0.0.0.0. This figure means 5126 years after the 0.0.0.0.0 the date on which the modern interpretation is 11. August 3114th year BC. Mayan calendar ends 2012th on the 21st in December.

It is clear that modern scientists have a little confidence that the Maya calendar actually ends on 13.0.0.0.0.  Can not be excluded that it will only be 20.0.0.0.0, which will be held around the 8000th year and the Mayans were simply intended to resume the counting again.
